Wigs are wonderful because they allow us to explore new colors and styles without a commitment, and give us confidence if we are going through hair loss. It’s important to keep up with regular wig care though because a wig that doesn’t feel clean won’t feel good. Fortunately, caring for your wig is easier than you may think!
Maintaining Regular Wig Care
To begin, make sure you brush your wig after each wear. Start at the ends and make your way to the scalp and crown. You don’t have to wash your wig as often as you brush it. Washing depends on how often you wear it and what conditions it has to withstand, like if you work out and it gets sweaty. When it’s time to wash your wig, be sure you are using cold water and products specifically designed for wigs.
Allowing the water to run in the same direction as the hair and using leave-in conditioner after are great ways to achieve a smooth, tangle-free wig. Part of maintaining regular wig care also includes its storage. What happens to the wig when you’re not using it is just as important as a gentle wash and thorough rinse.
For short-term storage, a wig stand will help maintain your wig’s shape. Otherwise, the wig should be folded ear to ear, parted in the center, and stored in its original packaging. In general, wigs should be kept away from direct sunlight, heat and dust.
