Exploring Hair Ethnicities
Would it surprise you to learn that your platinum blonde hairpiece began its life jet-black?
More often than not, it’s true. Because although human hair wigs come in an almost infinite array of colors and styles, obtaining hair in these same colors and textures is extremely difficult. This is why most wigs are created from hair gathered from one of four main ethnic groups: Chinese, Indonesian/Malaysian, Indian, and European.
Chinese:
Chinese hair, despite being dark brown to nearly black, is one of the most popular hair types for wigs of all colors due to its thickness, manageability, and strength. It is the only types of hair that does not noticeably degrade with processing, allowing wig makers to dye and style it in the widest variety of ways. Straight and sleek, it resists poofing over time, although it may not hold curl as well as some other hair types. Each strand is thick and textured.
Indonesian/Malasian Hair:
If Chinese hair is the most common, Indo-Malasian hair is one of the most desired. Each strand is finer and lighter than Chinese hair, making them higher-quality, but also more expensive. Virgin hair is usually dark brown and straight, although naturally wavy hair is also available.
Indian Hair:
Like Indo-Malasian hair, Indian hair is finer than Chinese and is similar in texture to European hair. The original locks are often long and usually very soft. These wigs hold curls well and are very responsive to styling; however, their quality varies considerably, so its best not to make your selection based on price alone. Because this kind of hair has a lot of natural texture that has to be processed out before the wig is manufactured, it can also begin to poof over time.
European Hair:
European hair, often collected from Russia and its Eastern European neighbors, is one of the rarest and most expensive. Virgin European hair is comes in a wide variety of colors, from medium-brown to light blonde, with many natural textures. They are only minimally processed and often undyed to display their natural beauty.
