Hair loss can occur at any age, even childhood. Whether due to an underlying illness like alopecia or treatment for an illness like chemotherapy, kids can experience hair loss, too. Just like anyone else, a children’s wig can be a great way to maintain self-care and self-confidence in children with hair loss.
Children’s wigs can be made for very young children and can be worn at any point that a child would willingly keep on a hat. While there is some responsibility required in wearing a wig, it’s only a little more than caring for natural hair and can be taught by parents as they would teach a child to wash and brush their own hair. The biggest concern in purchasing a wig for a child is the possibility of loss or damage to the investment. Consider a few options to make wig wearing a safe investment when it comes to children and wigs:
● Swap your wig for a cap or hat on days when things might get messy. Going to art camp or out hiking? This may not be the best place to wear a wig. Likewise, for kids involved in sports—a better solution may be needed.
● Choose short, simple styles. Is a long-haired wig getting damaged frequently? Since there is not the natural sense of hair being pulled with a wig, kids may not notice that their wig is getting caught, snagged or damaged. Consider choosing a shorter style that will stay out of the way
● Temper your expectations. Rough-and-tumble play may reduce the longevity of the wig, so make purchases based on realistic expectations of how long the wig will last. This may mean buying more less expensive wigs over the year, rather than one higher quality one that gets damaged.
● Compensate for growth. Sizing for children is of course the main question. Human skulls do not fuse until age 20, so wigs must compensate for growing size and shape. As sizing is essential to scalp health and wig fit, staying on top of sizing is important. Make sure to consult wig specialists to determine how long a wig will fit, and decide on your budget then.
● Have Some Fun. Especially appealing to younger wig shoppers may be the brightly colored wig options. From pastel pinks to bold oranges, wigs can come in many colors.
Typically these will be synthetic as achieving particularly dyed colors on human hair wigs can be a challenge. Fun wigs can be a great way to get some variety in hairstyles when wearing wigs. Kids often want to try out different looks, so why not mix up one typical hairstyle human hair wig with also a fun, synthetic look to swap around as needed?
