Purchasing your wig is an investment of time, money and confidence. But what happens when you try to size yourself for your wig and you measure wrong, or you buy your wig from not the most reputable of boutiques? You may end of with a wig cap that is either too large or too small. Wigs that are too small happen more often, and these simple steps will help with enlarging the wig cap.
Modifying Your Wig
To modify your wig, you’ll need to examine how your wig cap was made and gather extra materials. If your wig has an elastic band and wefts, you’ll need a piece of elastic that ideally matches the width and color of that in the wig, scissors, a needle and thread that matches the elastic.
Find the last weft in the front and the back of the wig and cut the elastic in both places, opening up the wig. Be sure to cut in between wefts and not cut any hair! Then take your new piece of elastic and cut just enough to make the wig fit comfortably. If your wig was only slightly too snug, a half inch or less should work. If you felt like your wig was so tight it was cutting off your blood supply, cut up to an inch of elastic. Cut two pieces of elastic, one for the front and one for the back.
Using a wig stand, turn the wig inside out. Take the piece of elastic and stitch it to the open elastic band on front of the wig. Then repeat with the back of the wig. Don’t worry too much about how neat your stitches are, since they will be under the wig and not shown (but try to keep the stitches even so that the elastics line up). Double knot the thread when you’re done stitching. Turn the wig right-side out and try it on for size.
